Is
the designation "organic"enough
to satisfy you when you select food for its purity, freshness and
nutrition? Is it important to know that the cows producing your milk
are treated humanely?
If you answered yes, you will be pleased to learn of Noris
Dairy, providers of fresh milk and cheese. Franz and Angela, the farmers
are dedicated to their cows well being. They meet organic certification
standards, do not use pesticides and herbicides and feeding their
own cows only organic feed, treat their cows with respect, consideration
and kindness.
The centuries old tradition of dairy animal husbandry,
rooted in Europe, is a mutually dependant and beneficial relationship
between humans and cows. The quality of this fine relationship is
based on longevity. Noris farmers honor this tradition of their Alpine
homeland.
They feed their herd largely grass with a small amount of grain.
Cows, ruminants with four stomachs, perfectly digest and utilize grass.
The Noris farmers reject the standard industry diet of rich, hard-to-digest
grains(resulting in high milk production)because it stresses cows'
bodies and drastically shortens their lives. Noris Farms cultivate
a bio diverse pasture which includes flowers, herbs and a hundred
other kinds of plants - a cows smorgasbord!
Noris Cows are comfortable, happy and healthy in
this environment. The most notable of Noris Dairy farm practices is
the farmers dedication to each and every cow. If a cow is sick, they
support her, giving her whatever she needs to heal herself. If a cow
is born with a minor defect or is not the greatest producer, they
keep her anyway. This is unheard of in the "industry", where
animals are expendable, replaceable machines. Noris Cows have a great
health measured in their extreme curiosity towards visitors and their
"running" fitness.
Angela and Franz believe that their cows give the
best milk available in exchange for the best care. It is a time tested
relationship.
Noris Dairy, located between Salem and Eugene, pasteurize
and bottle on the farm and deliver directly to the store, guaranteeing
maximum freshness. The farm offers whole milk with cream on top, 2%,
1% and nonfat milk. Both in returnable glass bottles. They also make
very fine cheeses, butter and ice cream in their facility, each made
from Noris fresh, whole organic milk.
